Your rights and how to check the car
- Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, a vehicle must be of acceptable quality (allowing for its age, price and condition), fit for any purpose you make known, match its description, and be free of any undisclosed security interest.
- Under the Fair Trading Act 1986, what a trader tells you about a vehicle must be true, and the details in the notice must be correct.
- Check for money owing on the car at ppsr.companiesoffice.govt.nz.
- Don't rely on the odometer alone. A mechanic's check before you buy is worth it.
- Look up a trader on the Motor Vehicle Traders Register.
- Complaints can go to the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal (0800 367 6838) or the Commerce Commission (0800 943 600).
